Melbourne Vixen debutante Karyn Howarth and fellow goaler Tegan Caldwell were today announced in the Australian Diamonds 22 player squad to attend a selection camp in early August.
Howarth, who has just finished her first season playing in the ANZ Championships, admits she is still ‘in shock.’
“I had to do a double take and my heart started pumping. It hasn’t sunk in yet but I’m so excited by the prospect.
“It was only a short time ago that I was asked to be in the Melbourne Vixens. To be eight months down the track, be a Vixen, get some good court time, be part of a Grand Final and then be named in the Diamonds squad – I’ve had a killer eight months. But I’ve still got a lot to learn and being part of the squad is a fantastic opportunity to do that,” Howarth said.
Caldwell played her third season with the Vixens this year, consolidating herself as the starting goal attack after former captain Sharelle McMahon announced her pregnancy in February.
“It’s very exciting and a good sign that my netball is growing and I’m heading in the right direction. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity and what’s to come in the next few months,”Caldwell said.
Vixen’s captain and Diamonds veteran Bianca Chatfield, Julie Corletto and Madison Browne also got the nod in the squad. Corletto and Browne were in the Diamonds team last year, while Chatfield was part of the squad.
The Vixens had the second most inclusions in the squad with five, following the Adelaide Thunderbird’s six inclusions – a testament to the strong performance by the Vixens in the 2012 ANZ Championships.
The squad of 22 players will attend a squad camp at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra, from 8 – 11 August. The Australian Diamonds team for the Constellation Cup and Quad-Series will be selected at the conclusion of the camp and announced on the final day.
The opening Test of the Constellation Cup against New Zealand in Melbourne is on Sunday 16th September.
