Record setting Vixens 80, vanquish Pulse, 39
The Vixens succeeded with their aim of scoring as many goals as possible in a bid to secure the Minor Premiership and a home semi-final. They must now wait for the result of tomorrow’s clash between the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Colourplus Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic to determine where the Major Semi-Final will be held.
Well-primed heading into the business end of the season, the Vixens dominated throughout to record the highest score of the season with a polished performance while offering a number of different combinations.
It spelt the end of the season for the Pulse. Buoyed by their first win of the competition last week against the NSW Swifts, it was a disappointing end for the Pulse who were punished for their lacklustre effort today.
Vixens coach Julie Hoornweg opted for a mixed line-up to start with but introduced one that had more of a top-seven look about it for the second stanza.
There were no surprises from the Pulse who presented with their winning combination of last week. Not over-awed by the occasion, the visitors matched the classy Vixens initially, but were slowly shut down as the game progressed.
As their new-look combination took time to gel, the Vixens found their feet in the latter stages of the quarter to build a significant buffer.
The shooting combination of Sharelle McMahon and Caitlin Thwaites was on song early, while Pulse struggled to breach the Vixens defence.
Both the defensive and shooting ends had their moments for Pulse, but lacked the consistency to stay with the Vixens who had stretched out to a 21-14 lead at the first break.
With the Vixens intent on securing as many goals as possible, Pulse’s game disintegrated as their ball supply dried up and their structure fell away. Running away on an imposing scoring spree, the Vixens out-pointed the struggling Pulse 21-7 during the quarter as they headed into half-time 42-21 ahead.
Both teams made a string of changes for the second half. The Vixens adapted seamlessly to their transitions with the introduction of goal attack Ashlee Howard providing extra movement in the circle.
Pulse continued to struggle on attack, too many loopy passes being easily picked off by the Vixens` defensive line. The Vixens stuck to their task, being largely untroubled on attack with slick and fluent progress through the midcourt.
The defensive pressure exerted by Ama Agbeze, Julie Corletto and Renae Hallinan squeezed the life out of Pulse, who simply ran out of options under the continued onslaught as the Vixens raced into the last break 62-28 ahead.
Both teams made a host of changes for an academic final stanza with the Vixens intent on pushing the margin to the limits and Pulse doing their best to limit the damage.
