McMahon celebrates 100 Tests in style
Sharelle McMahon has notched up her 100th Test cap with a fiery three-goal win against the New Zealand Silver Ferns in Brisbane.
In the lowest scoring 60-minute game in the two teams’ history, the Diamonds overcame a fierce Silver Ferns out fit to take a two-one lead in the five-match series.
Young defender Susan Furhmann was a shining light for the Australians in the goal circle taking out the player of the match for the second time in three matches.
In the final Test on Australian soil both teams started the game with an increased intensity knowing that the victor would take a mental edge to New Zealand.
In a tightly contested first quarter both team rued missed opportunities with the Australians shooting at a low 58 per cent accuracy, going into the first break trailing by three goals, 10-7.
A switched-on Diamonds outfit opened the second quarter with three unanswered goals to break even with the Kiwis.
The score see-sawed during the second quarter, with neither team able to open up a commanding lead.
Led by Susan Furhmann, Australia’s continued pressure in New Zealand’s goal circle led to New Zealand’s shooting accuracy dropping to 57 per cent while the Australian shooters began to find the back of the net, shooting at 85 per cent.
The even battle was reflected on the scoreboard with the scores locked at 18-all going into half-time.
The third term produced more tightly contested netball with both teams putting their bodies on the line.
Going goal for goal both teams struggled to penetrate the other’s defensive lines with both teams finding goals hard to come by.
While Williams and Katrina Grant began to pick up loose balls, their Australian counterparts Furhmann and Julie Corletto were also causing havoc for the New Zealand shooters.
A missed opportunity by van Dyk meant the Australians went into the last term one goal ahead, leading 28-27.
Both teams came out firing in the final term with the players growing more and more physical as the match went on.
With Furhmann matching van Dyk in the air, the Diamonds were able to grab a four-goal lead half way through the quarter.
New Zealand’s speedy mid-court helped to cut that margin down to two but the Diamonds proved calm and composed as the clock ticked down.
With a ball slipping through McMahon’s fingers with three minutes to go the Kiwis had their opportunity to pounce but some tight defence from Corletto meant the Australians would celebrate McMahon’s milestone in style, running out 36-33 victors.
The Australian Diamonds will now travel to New Zealand to play two more Tests against the New Zealand Silver Ferns.
