Vixens shine at Victorian Sport Awards
The Melbourne Vixens have stolen the show at the 2009 Victorian Sport Awards, taking out Victorian Women`s Team of the Year, and co-captain Sharelle McMahon claiming the Female Athlete of the Year and Sportsperson of the Year.
All awards were hotly contested in an exceptional year for Victorian sport, but the Vixens proved themselves worthy winners after their domination of the ANZ Championship. In a telling sign of the strength of Victorian netball, this award was won in 2008 by the undefeated Victorian Fury ANL side.
Sharelle McMahon received both the Victorian Female Athlete of the Year and also the Sportsperson of the Year award after a stellar season which saw her become the first Victorian, and only the third Australia to play 100 games for Australia. She also won the Melbourne Vixens` Best and Fairest and was named Best on Court in the ANZ Championship final
Vixens` coach Julie Hoornweg was only narrowly pipped at the post for the mantle of Coach of the Year, by Bushrangers` coach Greg Shipperd.
